Probabilities and Statistics

Presentation

This course aims to provide the mathematical bases in Probability and Statistics for Engineering courses at ULP.

At the end of the course, the student should:
- Mastering general concepts.
- Recognize the interest of the statistical treatment of data and results.
Mastering some sampling techniques, recognizing and avoiding major mistakes.
- Organize data sets.
- Make adjustments to mathematical sets of bivariate data and interpret the results.
- Decompose a time series and interpret the results then extracted.
- Mastering the concept of probability and recognize some theoretical distributions.
- Understand the importance of statistical inference, performing point estimation and interval estimation.
- Using Excel in the application of the above.

Objectives

It is intended that the student internalize the random nature of phenomena and the need to address data and results taking into account this aspect. The objective is to provide students with general concepts and the ability to statistically treat various data sets, managing to draw conclusions. At the same time, they should assign probabilities to some events of the day-to-day and also learn to apply some theoretical distributions in various situations.
The student will be motivated to use Excel to achieve several of the above goals.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

It is given a great emphasis on problem solving, when possible referred to the practice of the profession. A small part of the sessions has expository character and in this case, almost always accompanied by the resolution of illustrative exercises. Where applicable, whether the exhibits, and the resolution of exercises, result with the help of Excel.

Continuous mode Evaluation

It consists of two written tests , carried out in the classroom , with similar weights , consisting of both theoretical concepts , either in problem solving . The tests will be carried out with computer access . The first test will be held in school period at a date to be specified by the teachers . The completion of the second test is scheduled for the day and time as may be designated to carry out the Final Exam 1st Season.
