Presentation

The objective of this course is the production of a theoretical framework on the subjects of housing and dwelling and their role in the construction and transformation of the city. Addressing broad cultural and formal transformations of the collective inhabitation, preferentially as dwelling, this course draws a bridge with the studio exercise. It will debate and contextualize notions of habitat, domesticity and urban typology.

Syllabus

Introduction to the notions of habitat, domesticity, privacy, confort and forms of residence.

The syllabus, promotes the understanding of the collective way of living, its spatiality and forms through a theoretical reflection of paradigmatic study-cases, of recognized authors, with themes related to the discipline of design studio. This reading will allow the student to differentiate the various spatiality¿s and forms of the dwelling space and collective housing and its meaning in the contemporary city.

The development of the work comprehends a critical essay by analyzing (with graphic and written tools) different forms of dwellings that identify various characterizations of shelter  representativity and typology  of the collective living space through the introductory notions of module, cell,  space of  of living and its forms of residence.

Objectives

The exposure to the contents of this syllabus should enable the student to conceptualize in a precise manner its residential and urban experience. The student should acquire the critical and argumentative capacity to relate its dwelling space knowledge with the practice of architecture by the recognition of different dwelling and collective housing Spaces.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The course unfolds through classes that contextualize and questions the issues under debate by analyzing case studies in which students present their critically argumentative reflection. The student is expected to produce in the end a written essay articulated, reasoned according to the criteria of analysis and disciplinary synthesis. This essay and presentation in class will be the objects of evaluation. Assessment is continuous, without any kind of exam constituting the matter of evaluation, the exercises and written works as well as individual presentation and attendance. Due to Covid 19 and to the department directives the classes and evaluation are online.
