Presentation

The objective of this course is to study the methods and language of architecture through the theoretical framework of the space theme of inhabiting and its role in constructing the city. Addressing the cultural motivations of forms and their spaces will be debated and contextualized notions of methods and tools of the practice of architecture and languages of inhabiting, running this curricular unit on the bridge with the design studio exercise.

Syllabus

Introduction to the concepts of tools, methods and languages of architecture.

The syllabus, promote understanding of a theoretical reflection on cases of paradigmatic study of recognized authors, theme related to the discipline of design studio through the conceptual reasons, methods, tools and languages able to establish rules of the design project. This reading will allow the student to differentiate the various languages and the respective methods and tools from various authors. The development work naturally leads to the objective of understand the languages and the nature of the design of proposed spaces, through critical essay by analyzing (with graphic and written tools) in order to comprehend the compositional gesture.Simultaneously an approach to the study of historical research is introduced architectural culture and urban contexts that support the transformation of forms and contemporary spaces.

Objectives

Through exposure to the syllabus, is expected that the student is able to reconceptualize in a precise and efficient way his architectural experience and can also recognize different languages and methods of the subject of inhabiting. It is intended that students acquire critical and argumentative ability to relate the knowledge of inhabiting space and architectural culture with the project practice and recognition of their tools, methods and specific contemporary  languages

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The course unfolds through classes that contextualize and questions the issues under debate by analyzing case studies in which students present their critically argumentative reflection. The student is expected to produce in the end a written essay articulated, reasoned according to the criteria of analysis and disciplinary synthesis. This essay and presentation in class will be the objects of evaluation. Assessment is continuous, without any kind of exam constituting the matter of evaluation, the exercises and written works as well as individual presentation and attendance. Due to Covid 19 and to the department directives the classes and evaluation are online.
