Project 5.2

Presentation

The skills to be developed are established in the design practice field of concepts, theoretic and instrumental. Specifically the following skills are to be acquired by the students:

- capacity to understand the architectural idea, either conceptual or instrumental;

- comprehension of the integration and urban insertion of the architectural "object";

- capability of ordering spaces and forms at the intervention "real" site;

- interpretation ability of the programmatic requirements and its suitability to the morphology of the architectural "object" proposed;

- capacity of holding subjects of spatial, formal and constructive nature;

- exposure capability and referenced interpretation of proposed interventions;

- research ability and critical synthesis capacity.

The focus is on the design of "buildings" inserted in an urban context in transformation. The area of insertion, also an element of design, seeks to question problematic issues in order to establish the articulate of different scales and design problems, from the general to the particular and vice versa.

Therefore the "built form" and contemporary design project methodologies are present in all stages of the design approaches and are themes of specific architectural contemporaneous culture lectures.

The development of a long term design involves two purposes: 1st elaborating an urban space strategy that investigates the architectural "object" phenomenon as a whole; 2nd creating an unique and complex space, which seeks the reflection of its specific program, architectural formalization and deepening of the most sensitive parts the "object", from urban insertion to its morphological-programmatic, formal and material component

Objectives

The aim is determined in the theoretical and handling understanding of the instruments fundamental to the practice of contemporary design through the research, synthesis and experimentation is promoted, in this last course year, by responding to a "real" request with a high level of disciplinary complexity, conceptual and programmatic, focused on the architectural "built form", since the urban scale to the "object" and its respective materialization.

The aim is to understand the development process of a complex project, beggining from a contemporary idea of a building, from the 1/200 scale to the construction detail, to the development of these ideas in terms of real construction, adapting the project to the functional and constructive requirements demanded.

The phase of materialization, is developed to the point that defines the constructive nature of the project, in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of it, articulating the knowledge of the Building and Structures.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The methodology is sustained on:

- the theoretical "critic" and drawing resource as method, memory, image, and project design

- phased complexity stages to domain the studio project design instruments

- paradigmatic work projects presentations

- pertinent magisterial classes appraoching the Syllabus themes

- studying visits to works construction site.

The evaluation is continuou, without final exame, presence is required, intermediates phases include avaluation of colectiv sessions, that in general focus the capacity of:

- conceptual understanding between the transmitted learnings and architectectural proposals

- rigor in developed prepositions

- investigation, method and introduction of architectural concepts

- understanding of the insertion processes and urban transformation

- establishing relationship in scales and urban morphologies

- programmatic prepositions and morphologic adequation of the architectural "object"

- synthetic propositions through spatial and constructive design constraints.
