Project 4.1

Presentation

The Project discipline is core in the Architecture course. All other disciplines are linked to the Project. The

Project chair acts within the scope of the design of buildings and other constructions and spaces.

The architecture of our cities is based on the project, which is complemented by knowledge of the

building and structural systems.

Within the scope of the competences to be developed in this UC, concepts and ideas are developed, in

theory, form and materiality, reacting to the program and the context, articulating the knowledge and the

disciplines that converge in the project practice, such as:

ability to investigate in articulated manner - site, program and materiality

- Ability to produce the idea of project in the articulation of program and context;

-Ability to integrate in the idea and form the knowledge acquired in the other disciplines that converge in

the project.

Syllabus

1. Design of a public builiding.

The program will be the exercise of a project of an equipment building with public space in order to

articulate all the functionalities of the project and its correct insertion in the urban space. The area of

insertion will oblige to question and to take advantage of the impact to be achieved by the presence of

the building in that place. In this way the project will act in order to achieve an urban space strategy.

Students will be led to think the project as a formal representation of a functional program, performing

also an important role in surroundings urban space. By questioning all these major issues will encourage

the habit of thinking and researching also theoretical contents in order to improve the project.

Objectives

The aim is to understand the process of developing a complex project, from the initial ideas to its

formalization at 1/200 scale. It is intended to develop a contemporary project, suitable for a complex

program, in a complex urban situation, where the proposal must be structuring, articulating form, function

and context. The creative research of architecture is promoted as a synthesis of contemporary theoretical

issues, adapting to the functional requirements of the proposed programs. The territory is still questioned,

giving the project a positive role, transforming and influencing the context. The project is developed to the

point where a general understanding of it is grasped, articulating and integrating the knowledge of the

discipline of Construction and Structures in the expression of formal project ideas.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The methodology is based on:

- comparative criticism among all the works, with the participation of teachers from various disciplines that

converge on the project;

- discussion of exemplary projects in solving the problems posed;

- lectures relevant to the problems of the project;

- classes open to invited personalities;

- statement of intervention proposals;

-visits from study to works.

Assessment is continuous without Final Exam according to the Knowledge Assessment Regulations.

and Competences promulgated in September 2018. Assistance is required, with sessions of

collective assessment at intermediate stages, focusing on the capacities of:

- resolution of the problems posed by the project exercise, proper analysis of the territory and integration

interdisciplinary knowledge in the architectural proposal;

-methodology in research and project development;

- consistency of the project's theoretical intentions and rigor in its appropriateness;

- understanding of the program.
