Project 3.2

Presentation

This semester will be devoted to the Housing and City relation. The relation of the project with its surroundings or the complementarity of the building and public space are thus, basic questions. This approach intends to provide work at different scales and give meaning to a continuous reflection process. The duality private / public is, in the case of housing, a fundamental aspect and the transition spaces arising from this matter are particularly important as well as the ground-floor plan where the inevitable contact between the verticality of the building and its horizontal surroundings is produced.

One proposes the development of collective housing projects with special emphasis on the analysis of its implantation and its relations with the city

Syllabus

The program offers an understanding of housing as an urban mesh generator, as well as its analysis and understanding when in growth and transformation. This way students will be familiar with the working tools needed in order to know and understand the diversity of implantations, typologies and construction techniques, allowing to relate this knowledge to the historical perspective in order to apply them critically in the project and thus study :

- Uses and programs as integral elements of the project;

-function and space character

-notion of order: relation between functional organization, definition and structure

-deepening of the concepts of composition, extent and module

-consolidation of a methodology of spatial composition

-sensitivity towards the plastic qualities of materials

- Constructive and structural feasibility.

Objectives

-develop critical observation and analysis skills;

-understand and analyze different residential clustering systems. This involves both the understanding of the mechanisms of aggregation, as the consequences that stem from the application, such as density, urban form and organization.

-understand collective housing as an axis theme of social life of cities and people, assimilating the basic requirements of housing and basic housing programs.

-pay specific attention to the dimensional and programmatic issues that the project is bound in a reasonable and solvent mode.

-it is intended that the proximity to the actual conflict circumstances that the city presents is not understood as a resignation, but on the contrary, it is understood that it is in the real world of vicissitudes that the project can develop creatively.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

In the study of housing its traditional models should be questioned (which presupposes a thorough study of previous experiences) both in the typological approach, and in the use of materials. Thus the contemporary manipulation of several work scales justifies the fundamental transversality of the acquired knowledge in the Construction and Structure Units, whose teachers will actively participate in the critical debate.

The evaluation is continuous without Final Exam, in accordance with the Regulation of Evaluation of Knowledge and Competencies promulgated in September 2018.
