Project 3.1

Presentation

This semester aims to study a proposal for an urban area where one seeks to understand the local urban phenomenon as a whole, through the articulation and organization of volumes and spaces that integrate housing, equipment, services and free areas, taking as reference the smaller scale urban entity: the block. It should be thus favored the treatment of complex interrelationships of urban integration, urban morphology and architectural typologies.

The term "block" is intended to describe, in a generic and simplified mode, the design unit responsible for the scale transition between the architectural object and the city ,where it is now possible to study and propose a set of relatively complex spatial and functional relationships, in both the buildings as in the voids between them.

Syllabus

The program offers an understanding of housing as a generator of the urban mesh, as well as its analysis and understanding when in growth and transformation. Awareness of the role of drawing and models in spatial research will be fundamental. This way students will be familiar with the working tools needed in order to know and understand the genuine usefulness of architecture and relations its own forms  establish with the ways of living, deployments and construction techniques, allowing to relate this knowledge with a historical perspective in order to apply them critically in the project and thus:

- Reflect on issues of integration in urban surroundings

- Promote the typological organization of the urban ensemble, as well as a collective housing program that proposes reflection on  its inside activities and valorization of its community and transition spaces.

Objectives

It is intended that the student understands architecture as a space organizer phenomenon between the scales of the building and the city and to understand that the scales of the object and of the territory are inseparable. Being the city the privileged theme, it is essential that its understanding is realized through the project.

- Understand the project from the disciplinary architecture tools and particularly from the attention to the site in its broadest sense, the social organization of a program, considering new ways of living and the proposal of the spatial container through the implementation of geometry, building systems, material and light (sunlight).

- Practice the communication of architectural design in all its forms - oral, written, graphical and in representation models, which often provide public discussion of such projects. Its scope will be presentations and public assessments in practical classes as well as sessions of collective discussion.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

An exercise on a consolidated area will be held where, nonetheless, the transfer function signals are verifiable, of change of intervention scale and / or spaces transformations. The exercise will aim to study a proposal for an urban area where one seeks to understand the local urban phenomenon as a whole, through the articulation and organization of volumes and spaces that integrate housing, equipment and free areas. It should be thus favored the treatment of complex interrelationships of urban insertion, architectural typologies and urban morphologies.

The evaluation is continuous without Final Exam, in accordance with the Regulation of Evaluation of Knowledge and Competencies promulgated in September 2018.
