Objectives
Taking William Shakespeare as the canonical center of universal literature, the course will attempt to introduce students to a selective sample of Shakespearean productions. The intention of the course is not so much to participate in any literary cult by means of a possible type of bardolatry but rather to close reading it, seeking, through the proposed texts, to discuss and analyze the central figure of Shakespeare and his scope both in classical and in modern theatre. Other authors may and should gravitate around this central axis, some as influences, others as influenced.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
The essential concern of the course is to read fundamental texts in the History of Theatre. It will seek to develop faculties of reading, analysis and commentary, leading to a critical and argumentative competence. It is hoped that students will also be able to develop a historical-cultural understanding of the proposed texts.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
Reading and critical discussion of texts in the room, as well as analysis of the historical and dramaturgical contexts of each of the works. Use of complementary sources (miscellaneous texts, films, entertainment media). The evaluation will be as follows: participation in class (40%), four papers written at the end of each unit (40%) and a final essay on the corpus worked (20%).
