Presentation

Students who successfully complete the course unit will demonstrate the following skills through tests, homework and written reports:

Understanding the quasi-one-dimensional flow;

Understanding impulse generation in atmospheric engines and rockets;

Ability to analyze the performance of subsonic and supersonic nozzles;

Ability to perform overall performance calculations of turbojets, turbofan engines and turboprops;

Elementary understanding of combustion chambers, afterburners and exhaust nozzles;

Understanding the axial flow in compressors and turbines and the ability to perform flow and performance calculations;

Ability to perform simple rocket flight performance calculations;

Understanding fundamentals of chemical rocket performance;

Understanding the operation of solid and liquid fuel rocket engines.

Syllabus

One-dimensional flows: isentropic, with variation of area, with addition of heat.

General performance characteristics of propellers, stator reactors, turboreactors, turbofan engines and rocket motors.

Performance analysis of nozzles, injectors, compressors, burners and turbines.

Rocket engine performance (chemical rockets, liquid / solid fuels).

Project. Written reports.

Objectives

The objective of this UC is to provide the students the fundamentals about physics, working and analysis performance of aeronautical and aerospace propulsion devices. The UC reviews and verifies compressivel aerodynamics knowledge, using to buit the analysis tools in the evaluation of both atmospheric and rocket thrusters.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The classes are composed of a theoretical part, complemented by solving exercises and case studies. Students are encouraged to participate and restore student initiative in the educational process for their own formation.

The course structure is composed of theoretical-practical classes. In the theoretical-practical classes will be used an interactive method with presentation of subjects by audiovisual, with practical examples and problems for the students to solve individually or in a group or with the help of the teacher.

 

Pedagogical innovation practices:

Pedagogical innovation practices are considered, within the scope of this CU, discussions oriented to real cases, applied to the academic area of students. These discussions are continuous and are applied after the theoretical presentation of each theme.
