Water and Wastewater Treatment Techniques


In this Curricular Unit are presented topics on Engineering sciences applied to water and effluent treatment processes and advanced Engineering information about water and effluent treatment technologies. Future graduates can apply the knowledge acquired in this curricular unit in the operation of WTPs and WWTPs and in the design of different treatment processes. It is a fundamental curricular unit in any Environmental Engineering program.

Acquisition of knowledge on contamination sources of surface and groundwater and on physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of water and wastewater. Awareness of the politics of 4 Rs for the protection of the environment: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. Acquisition of advanced knowledge in Engineering, regarding water and wastewater treatment, directed to the design and operation of treatment plants.

Acquisition of basic knowledge on: Conception, design, implementation and operation of water and wastewater treatment systems; Process integration; Sludge management and treatment.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

METHODOLOGY: The program contents will be presented in theoretical sessions, using audiovisual media and raising the interaction of students and, where possible, providing examples of case studies.

Practical sessions: Resolution of problems. Oral presentations of specific topics and relevant case studies by the students, individually or in group.
