Drawing IV

Presentation

The UC Desenho IV aims to complete the design study cycle for design with an important design tool, which is "color and perception". Since "color" is one of the variables that make up the system of signs and signals by which information can be visually encoded, communicated and decoded, it is considered essential to understand it as a powerful tool for the transmission of ideas and emotions in the context from the project. The "color" can capture the attention of the target audience in a direct and strong way, but also subtle and gradual, therefore, its in-depth study is considered pertinent to be understood as a creative element within the visual communication design process.

Syllabus

The following syllabus is considered:

  • The physical phenomenon of color;
  • Reality and chromatic effect: the pigment;
  • Color interactions and chromatic illusion phenomena;
  • Realization of the chromatic circle of 12 colors;
  • Chromatic harmonies;
  • Johannes Itten's seven color contrasts;
  • Design with the "color" component: use of color within the visual communication project.

Objectives

The course unit is integrated into the course curriculum with the main objective of enhancing the development of the following skills:

  • Deepen the theoretical and practical knowledge of Color and Perception to carry out the activity of visual communication designer in its various contexts;
  • Learn to recognize some phenomena of chromatic illusion provided by the interaction of colors, based on the experiences of Josef Albers;
  • Understand the structural theory of colors through the chromatic circle, the seven color contrasts, and the chromatic harmonies, based on the studies of Johannes Itten;
  • Exercise and use the rules of Color and Perception within the scope of the visual communication project.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The teaching methodology consists of developing a set of practical exercises to be carried out during the class period. The topics covered will be explored and studied through dynamic activities with group discussion in order to provide students with the discovery of the phenomena of Color and Perception.

Mandatory presence in 75% of contact classes, with the exception of students with student/worker status.

The assessment is continuous and consists of the elaboration of exercises in the classroom and two works of visual communication, in which the student must apply the learned color theory.

The weight of exercises performed in the classroom is 20%. The first work is individual and has a weighting of 40%. The second work is also individual, has a weighting of 40% and must be delivered at the last moment of evaluation.
