Syllabus

The framework should be set between the definition of the reality attributes to be studied, and the awareness of works and/or fundamental texts of contemporary authors, to be intensely and rigorously analysed: documenting its conception and analysing its constructive process. Each researcher establishes the conditions in which one thinks (and knows) such reality; in this sense, we find pertinent three different investigation approaches that are also convergent:
a) the conceptual logic of the building;
b) the structural and constructive logic of the same building;
c) the coherent relations between a) and b) that leads to a language

Objectives

The goal of this Investigation Line is to study the architectural space in its constructive dimension, through the acquisition, with sensitive awareness, of essential scientific knowledge of materials and building techniques present in several constructive processes, with a critical approach. One assumes a fundamental contribute towards the knowledge of contemporary architecture, an awareness of a cultural and material context and its aesthetic meaning.
In this sense, one intends to ensure that this investigation will become a support of the necessary tools to the architectural creation, constantly referred to the site¿s context and its productive system. Thereby, we encourage the development of a ¿constructive conscience¿ that will inspire in the researcher a new critical sense towards the process of conceiving a project and the understanding of Architecture.

Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

These studies focus on investigation and knowledge of the Conception and project process and in the behavioural context of these activities.
Through practical exercises elaborated with various techniques, it is intended to develop:
- The utilisation of a current and universal theoretical framework that will support critical reflection
- The understanding of architecture conception from a scientific and cultural point of view
- The interdisciplinary crossing present in the actual creations and the capacity of formulating complex solutions
- A coherent, structured and innovator philosophic thought.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

It is intended to approach the technical questions that involve the construction of architecture, not only in a pragmatic way, as a corset to the creative act, but instead as a stimulus and source of inspiration. In that way, it will be elaborated a project of realist character that will allow to debate and acquire the necessairy instruments to the architectonic action.
